Dr. Philip J. Mayer

Dr. Philip J. Mayer is an Orthopedic Surgeon, board certified by American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He completed fellowship training in the disciplines of spinal surgery, pediatric orthopedics and sports medicine. The treatment of spinal disorders of all types including, deformities, infections, tumors, and degenerative and rheumatological disorders of the spine has dominated his career since entering into practice on 1979.

After graduating from the University of Louisville, School of Medicine, with an M.D. degree in 1971, Dr. Mayer completed a rotating surgery internship and one year of general surgery residency at the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond Virginia Her, from 1971-1973.

In 1968, Dr. Mayer volunteered for the United States Navy Ensign 1915 Program, and from 1973 to 1975, Dr. Mayer served as a General Medical Officer for the United Stated Navy, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander USNR. Formal Discharge from the United States Navy was received in 1992.

Dr. Mayer successfully completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the University Rochester, School of Medicine and Dentistry (1975-1978), after which he pursued fellowship training in spinal surgery, sports medicine, and pediatric orthopedics at the Children's Hospital Medical Center, Harvard University, and at the Dutchess of Kent Children's Orthopedics Hospital and Convalescent Home, University of Hong Kong.

Following an extensive academic career, which included teaching in many orthopedic surgery residents in the principles and practice of spinal surgery, lecturing for eight years at orthopedic board review courses for the Osler Institute, and serving as Head, Division of Spinal Surgery, Henry Ford Hospital Medical Center Department of Orthopedics, and has Associate Professor of Clinical Orthopedics and of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Wayne State University, Detroit Medical Center, Dr. Mayer entered into private practice in 1996.  He founded the successful MY SPINE CENTER, servicing the Oakwood Hospital medical system and the St. Mary Mercy Hospital, Livonia, Michigan.

Since May, 2005 Dr. Mayer has pursued a career in the non-operative treatment of patients with spinal disorders with an emphasis on the treatment of subacute and chronic back and neck pain.  He is a strong advocate of evidence based medicine in action.

After many years of research, study and preparation, Dr. Mayer is pleased to announce the opening of his practice, Phillip J. Mayer M.D., P.L.L.C, located in Northville, Michigan at 311 E. Main, Suite A.  Dr. Mayer is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art evidence based non-operative care for people with back and neck pain problems.
